It is also possible to attach the pulse oximeter to the heel when measuring oxygen saturation in young children, allowing for a trouble-free diagnosis. The oxygen level is measured using a so-called photometric method. The pulse oximeter consists mainly of a light source and a sensor. The light source emits infrared waves that pass through the finger during the measurement. It is therefore the two beams of red and infrared light that will detect the oxygen level in the blood. The sensor then evaluates which parts of the light have not been absorbed. This absorption of light in the blood is influenced by the color of the hemoglobin. The color of the hemoglobin depends on the oxygen saturation of the blood: irrigated hemoglobin is light red, while non-irrigated hemoglobin is dark red.
Pulse oximeters are used in both the medical and private sectors because they are easy to use and provide reliable results. In medicine, they are mainly used in rescue operations, outpatient internist procedures and in anesthesia, where they are an integral part of standard patient monitoring. In addition, they enable healthcare professionals to diagnose insufficient oxygenation, for example in the case of an asthma attack or pneumonia. In addition, they are used in sport aviation to prevent hypoxia, commonly referred to as insufficient oxygenation, during high altitude flights.
It is also imperative to ensure a complete and accurate examination after the birth of a child in order to diagnose possible congenital heart defects as soon as possible. For this purpose, an oxygen saturation measurement should be performed no later than 24 to 48 hours after the birth of the child. For this measurement, the pulsometer is attached to the heel of the child and thus allows an accurate measurement. If there are any abnormalities, additional tests are required.
The advantages of pulse oximeters are various. It is a non-invasive, painless and risk-free method for patients. It provides real-time SpO2 values and offers the possibility of continuous patient monitoring and heart rate control.
Normal values, i.e. for a healthy person, are between 97% and 100% oxygen saturation. For children and adolescents, the ideal value is 100%. The ideal oxygen saturation for adults is about 98%. A saturation of up to 90% is tolerated in the elderly. A value below the norm, depending on the age of your patient, may be due to an incorrect measurement or potential illness. Pulse oximeters are indispensable for an initial measurement of oxygen saturation (SpO2) as well as pulse rate in the medical field, e.g. in the emergency or intensive care unit. An additional blood gas analysis can lead to an even more accurate diagnosis.
