An eye test is used to check the vision of the eyes. Depending on what needs to be tested, there are different examination methods for performing different eye tests.
Visual acuity or vision is the ability of the human eye to clearly distinguish objects such as patterns and outlines. Simply put, it is the resolving power of the visual organ. Visual acuity is the most important measurable parameter of vision and indicates how far apart two points must be for the retina to perceive them as separate points. To check visual acuity, visual test boards representing different figures of different sizes are used. Among visual tests, the most common are visual test boards with numbers or letters, as well as visual test boards with E-hooks or Landolt rings, which are used to diagnose possible visual impairment. Both symbols are displayed in different positions on the respective visual boards, and the patient is asked to indicate how the angle E is positioned or where the opening of the Landolt ring is pointed. With these simple visual tests, visual impairments in patients can be detected quickly and easily.
There are also visual tests suitable for small patients so that visual impairments in children can be identified at an early age through a focused eye examination. For example, some of the eye test boards in the DocCheck store have images of animals, so that eye tests can also be performed by preschoolers.
Although most eye tests primarily measure visual acuity, it is equally important for the eye doctor to check the eyes' ability to perceive colors. Color tests are used to assess the patient's ability to distinguish colors. For color testing, different color charts are used to check patients' color vision and identify a possible color deficiency. Well-known color charts are the Ishihara color charts for diagnosing red-green deficiency and the Velhagen charts for diagnosing the rarer yellow-blue deficiency. The color charts represent figures made up of dots of different colors. If a patient suffers from color blindness, he or she will not be able to distinguish the different colors and shades or see contrasts on this vision test. There are also color tests specifically for children, using images.
The Amsler test examines the retina for early detection of macular disorders. The Amsler grid simply consists of a fine square grid with black lines on a white background and a black dot in the center of the grid. By asking several questions and covering one eye with the hand each time, the doctor can perform the eye exam with this simple visual test.
