Birdie - Air quality sensor from Birdie

Birdie (formelry known as Canairi) is an award-winning air quality sensor with minimalist and playful design language. Based on the historical function of canaries as an indicator of air quality in mining, the design for Birdie was created. It monitors the carbon dioxide level indoors. When the measured value becomes too high, Birdie hangs upside down. This silent gesture prompts the user to take action to improve the air, for example by ventilating. Once the air quality has improved, the bird comes back to "life" and sits on top of the pole. Birdie is a playful solution to draw attention to bad air in waiting rooms, classrooms and offices.

          Product details

          • Playful CO2 monitor for displaying air quality
          • Unambiguous design language in canary design
          • In case of bad room air (high carbon dioxide content) the bird hangs downwards
          • When the carbon dioxide level is low, Canairi returns to the standing position
          • The device emits no light and no sound
          • Long battery life
          • Originated from a Kickstarter project in Denmark
          • Awarded international design prizes (Design Educates Awards 2022, A' Design Award 2022 for product design)
          • For wall mounting
          • Threshold: > 1000 ppmCO2 for more than 10 minutes
          • Material: recycled plastic
          • Incl. USB charging cable and wall bracket
          • Color: white/yellow

Designer sensor as an air traffic light

The design idea of the Birdie Fresh Air Monitor uses storytelling and gamification to draw attention to poor air quality. Indoors, "thick air" often occurs unnoticed. Carbon dioxide comes from the air we breathe, and the limit for rooms is the Pettenkofer value (1,000 ppm or 0.1% by volume CO₂). Excessive carbon dioxide in indoor air affects the ability to concentrate and can increase the risk of infections, headaches, and sleep disturbances.

Birdie indicates CO2 levels above 1000 parts per million (ppm) by hanging down from its pole. For a healthy indoor climate, this is the right time to change the air. To keep the canary bird "alive", a few minutes of shock ventilation are often enough. The simple design language is easy to understand and invites everyone to join in. The little bird does not need any light, sound or digital displays. Therefore, the sensor does not disturb at work or in bedrooms.
