What is moxibustion? Moxibustion, also known as moxatherapy, is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy originating in the cold mountainous regions of northern China. Closely related to acupuncture, moxibustion involves heating different areas of the body (usually acupuncture points) with glowing moxa grass. The moxa herb is made of dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), a medicinal and aromatic plant known in natural medicine. According to TCM, the gentle, deep heat of the dried mugwort is intended to treat possible states of energetic cold and emptiness in the body.
The thermal stimulation generated by moxibustion should activate the body's self-healing forces by strengthening blood circulation, metabolism and organ function through heat. Moxibustion is generally used to treat diseases caused by internal or external cold. Possible areas of application of moxa therapy are therefore cold as well as gastrointestinal disorders or muscle tension. There is direct and indirect moxibustion. In direct moxibustion, moxa cones are placed on the identified and inflamed acupuncture points. To avoid burning, intermediate supports such as ginger or garlic slices are often used. Ginger slices not only offer protection against burning and blistering, but also offer an additional therapeutic effect by having a warming effect. The moxa cone is moved to the next treatment point as soon as the patient feels a sensation of heat during the moxibustion.
The western version of moxatherapy involves less direct burning of the moxa herb on the skin than indirect treatment. Indirect moxibustion involves the use of special moxa cigars. The moxa herb, rolled in a thin paper like a cigar, is ignited and held at a certain distance from the skin on the corresponding acupuncture points. It is also possible to combine acupuncture and moxa with moxa cigars: this is needle moxa. In this form of indirect heat therapy, the inflamed moxa herb is attached to the acupuncture needle. The needle transmits the heat directly to the patient's skin, allowing for more precise targeting of the meridians.
Sometimes a child may adopt a position that doctors think is inappropriate during pregnancy. In these cases, many midwives offer moxibustion. The purpose of moxibustion is to promote the rotation of the baby from the breech position to the normal delivery position (cranial position). To do this, the moxa cigar is held alternately on the right and left side near the outer edge of the little toe. The heat from the burning moxa cigar activates the acupuncture point of a specific meridian, which stimulates the uterine muscles and causes mild contractions that can cause the baby to turn over.
