Many scales do more than just display body weight. The determination of body composition is not only interesting for athletes or health conscious people, but also for those who want to lose weight. If the body weight has not changed despite regular exercise and a change in eating habits, it is possible to determine whether the development of muscles is the cause of this by means of an impedance meter.
Body composition monitors go hand in hand with the process of measuring a bioimpedance. During a bioimpedance (or BIA) test, electrodes placed at specific points on the body emit a very weak current that is not felt. This allows us to deduce that fat mass is a worse conductor than muscle mass. Through the different electrical impedances captured by the analyzer, it is possible to derive information on the volume of water contained in the body, which will then be converted into a fat mass index (FMI).
In many body composition monitors, the electrodes are only located at the weighing pan, so they only come into contact with the feet. As a result, the transmitted current flows only through the legs to the groin area. Any fat above the legs, such as belly fat, will not be captured by the machine. In contrast, high-end analyzers, usually equipped with multiple hand and foot electrodes, provide more accurate information. Body composition analyzers with additional hand sensors also measure the amount of fat found in the upper body. Using a four-point or eight-point measurement, weighing can be done at multiple points simultaneously. This is how body composition analyzers (or impedance meters) can accurately determine the amount of fat in the body.
