          Which eye test types do we have?

          Eyes tests are used to check the eye’s vision. There are different kinds of tests depending on what exactly needs to be examined.

          Eye tests – Testing visual acuity with eye charts

          The terms visual acuity and vision refer to the ability of the human eye to clearly distinguish objects like patterns and outlines. Simply put, it is the power of the eye. Visual acuity is the most important measurable parameter of vision and indicates how far apart two points must be for the retina to perceive them as separate points. To check visual acuity, health professionals use visual test boards that represent different figures of different sizes. The most common types are the ones with numbers or letters, as well as Landolt C and E charts. . These two last ones display the symbols in different positions to ask the patient how they are positioned. These simple visual tests help detect quickly and easily visual impairments in patients.

          There are also visual tests suitable for young patients. These will allow you to identify visual impairments in children at an early age. Some of the eye charts on DocCheck have images of animals, which can be easily identified by preschoolers.

          Colour charts – Vision tests for colour blindness

          Although most eye tests primarily measure visual acuity, it is equally important for the eye doctor to check the eyes' ability to perceive colours. Colour tests are used to assess the patient's ability to distinguish colours. There are different kinds of colour charts, like the Ishihara one for diagnosing red-green colour blindness and the Velhagen charts for diagnosing the rarer yellow-blue colour blindness. The colour charts represent figures made up of dots of different colours. If a patient suffers from colour blindness, they will not be able to distinguish the different colours and shades or see contrasts. There are also colour tests specifically for children, which use images rather than numbers or letters.

          Amsler test for retinal disorders

          The Amsler test examines the retina for macular disorders. The Amsler grid simply consists of a fine square grid with black lines on a white background and a black dot in the centre of the grid. By asking several questions and covering one eye with the hand each time, the doctor can perform the eye exam with this simple visual test.
