          Tympanometry is an objective audiometric method used in otolaryngology to examine the middle ear. It is an examination method that is part of Impedance Audiometry and measures the acoustic resistance (impedance) of the eardrum using a tympanometer to check the proper functioning of the middle ear. Tympanometry is not a hearing test to check hearing ability, but it does provide clues to possible diseases of the middle ear and eardrum. For example, it can be used to diagnose disorders of the ossicles or to detect the presence of fluid in the middle ear.

          How is tympanometry performed with a tympanometer?

          The examination with the tympanometer is fully automated and takes only a few seconds. Moreover, it requires no active participation by the patient. When measuring impedance with a tympanometer, a small measurement probe is inserted into the patient's external ear canal. This probe is connected to the impedance audiometer and measures the pressure in the middle ear. This makes it possible to obtain measured values for the eardrum's response to test sounds at different air pressures, which are then transmitted in the form of a tympanogram. These results can be easily printed on the device for evaluation with the appropriate roll of thermal paper.
