          What measurements are possible with an ABI system?

          Pulse wave velocity measurement: Cardiovascular diseases can also be detected with an ABI system. This is possible thanks to the measurement of the pulse wave velocity.

          Blood pressure: Of course, you can measure blood pressure accurately, easily and quickly with the ABI system. To do this, you must use the cuff of the device as a normal blood pressure monitor.

          How does the ABI Blood Pressure Monitor work?

          The basic principle of the ABI system is the classical blood pressure measurement with a cuff. However, instead of a stethoscope, the ABI monitor uses Doppler ultrasound to measure the pressure values, which allows you to see or hear the blood flow in the arteries. Some newer ABI blood pressure monitors also determine the ABI value by oscillometry and not by Doppler ultrasound. In oscillometric measurement, the oscillations (pressure changes) caused by the pulse waves are recorded by special leg and arm cuffs and converted into blood pressure values using a computer.

          The systolic value, which indicates the blood pressure during the systole (ejection phase) of the heart, is relevant for the measurement with the ABI blood pressure monitor. The ankle brachial index is then calculated by dividing the systolic blood pressure measured in the arm by the one measured in the ankle.
