Non-contact examinations with infrared thermometers
No contact = no contamination! Infrared clinical thermometers feature an innovative sensor that allow you to measure a body’s temperature without having to touch the patient. You get the measured temperature in just a few seconds. These modern thermometers can be placed in the ear or other body parts. There are also infrared instruments from manufacturers like boso, Braun or Welch Allyn.
Infrared ear thermometer
The well-known ear thermometer function with infrared technology: it measures the heat rays emitted by the eardrum and its tissue. The results are shown on the device's display within seconds.
For hygienic reasons, doctors always use protective caps and covers that go over the ear thermometer’s tip. These are available as disposable products, or as reusable ones that have to be thoroughly cleaned after each examination.
Advantages
- Highly accurate results
- Hygienic
- Easy and fast temperature measurement
- Ideal for babies, children and adolescents (note: not suitable for babies under 6 months!)
- Many functions: age-based temperature display, acoustic signals, positioning aids…
Disadvantages

Forehead & co. infrared clinical thermometers
There are also infrared thermometers that measure the patient’s temperature without having to touch them at all. You just have to place the thermometer’s sensor in front of the forehead, temple, or eyelids. The measured temperature is shown on the display after a couple of seconds. And you can even measure surfaces’ and liquids’ temperature!
Advantages
- Hygienic
- Easy and fast temperature measurement
- Perfect for babies, children and adolescents (you can even measure a baby’s temperature while they are sleeping)
Disadvantages
- Lower result accuracy than contact thermometers (focus of this device is detecting fever, not determining the exact body temperature)
