Electrodes are electroconductive objects that create and conduct electrical currents in combination with counter electrodes. The currents flow through the tissue in between the electrodes. Depending on their type, the ECG electrodes can be applied on the body as extracorporeal electrodes or inserted into tissue as intracorporeal electrodes. ECG electrodes are especially applied in resting, long-term, and stress ECG measurements. They can be used to record and graphically represent electrical processes in the heart muscle to draw conclusions about the heart function.
In the medical industry, there are different types of ECG electrodes that are specially adapted to their respective requirements. Depending on how the electrodes are attached, we differentiate between adhesive, suction, and clamp electrodes.
Adhesive electrodes are usually used for stress, resting, and long-term ECG monitoring. As single-use electrodes, they can be disposed of after use. Self-adhesive electrodes are often made of flexible foam or textile fleece and can be attached to the patient’s skin like a plaster. On the backside of each self-adhesive electrode, there is a plug connector or snap button for connecting the adhesive electrode with an ECG device via an ECG cable. The electrodes are available in different sizes and with different connection methods depending on the area of application and examination. Self-adhesive electrodes are characterized by their simple and hygienic handling, their extremely high conductivity, and their low price. The additional use of so-called contact agents with adhesive electrodes is usually not necessary.
ECG suction electrodes are especially used for ECGs with chest wall leads. The reusable suction electrodes are equipped with a rubber ball that creates negative pressure which lets the ECG electrodes adhere to the patient’s skin. To ensure sufficient contact with the skin, the respective areas should be free of body hair. These electrodes can also be used with so-called contact agents such as electrode sprays to ensure reliable measurements. The suction electrodes have to be cleaned and disinfected after every use to prevent the risk of cross-contaminations.
Clamp electrodes are exclusively used for extremity leads. The reusable ECG electrodes are attached to wrists and ankles and remain on the respective body parts thanks to spring force. Contact agents like electrode paper or electrode cream ensure reliable measuring results.
