Tympanometry – Measuring the middle ear pressure
A tympanometry is an audiometric procedure used in ENT medicine to examine the middle ear. You use a tympanometer to measure the acoustic resistance (impedance) of the eardrum, checking like this the functionality of the middle ear. Tympanometry is not a hearing test to check a patient’s hearing ability, but provides indications of possible diseases of the middle ear and eardrum. You can determine, for example, ossicles disorders or if there are any fluids in the middle ear.
How do you perform a tympanometry with a tympanometer?
An examination with the tympanometer is fully automatic; takes just a few seconds, and does not require the patient to do anything. We have both practical and hand-held devices and devices with large touchscreen displays from the Maico brand. When using a tympanometer, you insert the small measuring probe into the patient's external auditory canal, which is then connected to the impedance audiometer and measures the pressure conditions in the middle ear. The tympanometer generates test tones with different frequencies and sound levels while simultaneously changing the pressure in the ear. The results are based on the different reactions of the eardrum to the test tones at different air pressures. These results come in the form of a tympanogram that can be conveniently printed out of the device onto a thermal paper roll.
