Reflex hammers for medical examinations

Reflex hammers or percussion hammers are medical diagnostics instruments that work by generating a knocking sound. They are used for triggering certain reflexes in tendons and muscles by lightly pounding on the body parts you want to examine.

Reflex hammers are an important diagnostic instrument in both the general and neurology medical field. It can be used by doctors, alternative practitioners, paramedics, and medical students, since it is a one of the basic diagnostic instruments.

How percussion hammers are designed

All reflex hammers are similar: they consist of a hammer head and a hammer handle. The differences are in the details. The handle can be solid or hollow and made of plastic or metal. The head is mounted on the handle’s upper part. There are many different kinds of heads: round or triangular, one or two-sided, with a tomahawk or viking axe shape…

Most reflex hammer models have two different sized rubber buffers on the hammer’s head. The large rubber pole is used to trigger reflexes on the large tendons of the extensor muscles. Some of these may be the patellar tendon reflex, the Achilles tendon reflex or the triceps tendon reflex. It is also suitable for drifting away pain that may be caused by the punctual pressure. The smaller rubber buffer is used for checking the flexor muscle’s tendons, e.g. the biceps tendon reflex. The pointy metallic spike on the hammer’s handle is used to trigger skin reflexes.

A neurological reflex hammer may also have a small metal spike, needle or brush on the head. These are used by neurologists to check the patient’s skin sensitivity and reflexes.
