Magill intubation forceps – the details
The Magill forceps feature toothed and widened gripping jaws. This makes the intubation forceps particularly suitable for use in the oral and pharyngeal area. In combination with laryngoscopy, they are frequently used to remove foreign bodies from the upper airways, as well as to position tubes during nasal intubation and to insert gastric tubes into the esophagus.
Like other medical instruments, the Magill forceps are made of metal and are therefore fully autoclavable. They were invented by the Irish anesthetist Ivan Whiteside Magill – which is why the forceps bear his name – who also developed a special endotracheal tube.
For adults, the total length is 24 cm.
