          What is a COVID test?

          There are many ways to detect SARS-CoV-2 infection, from RT-PCR tests to rapid antigen tests: Rapid antigenic tests are convenient because they can be used at any location and without sending the sample to a laboratory. In addition, they provide a reliable result in as little as 10 to 15 minutes. This type of rapid test is usually performed in doctors' offices, hospitals or emergency rooms. Testing is recommended for a variety of conditions:

          • If you have Covid symptoms such as fever, cough, loss of taste or smell.
          • If you are a contact case.
          • If you want to travel abroad.

          When in doubt, don't wait to act and get tested. Remember, a Covid test only tells you if you are a carrier of the virus at the time of testing. There is medical coverage for the different Covid tests according to certain criteria.           How does a COVID test work?

          The Covid-19 rapid tests allow the detection of the virus either through the detection ofantigens (viral proteins) or through the detection ofantibodies. In both cases, it is an antigen-antibody reaction, which is made visible by immunochromatography.           How do I use a COVID antigen test?

          The Covid-19 virus has been shown to colonize the respiratory tract, particularly the upper tract. In order to detect it, the objective of a swab test is to bring back, by swabbing, cells that may contain the virus. There are different types of swabs, not to be confused with the testing methods detailed below.

          Nasopharyngeal swabbing is the most common, and consists of introducing a swab into the nostril in order to collect cells by rotating the swab. Oropharyngeal sw abbing consists of introducing the swab into the oropharynx, i.e. the back of the throat. This sampling method replaces nasopharyngeal sampling in certain contraindications, but it is often less qualitative. Saliva sampling is the least accurate of all, because the quantities of virus are lower, it is only suitable for the PCR technique and is reserved for a targeted category of people.

          Are covid self-tests accurate?

          Studies have shown that rapid antigen tests performed with a nasal swab are as effective as those performed with a nasopharyngeal swab. Therefore, their specificity and sensitivity are equal. You can find specific information on each manufacturer's page.

          What does a positive / negative result mean?

          Positive result: The probability of SARS-CoV-2 infection is high. Please contact a physician and the health professionals of the competent authorities immediately. However, this is not mandatory.

          Negative result: The probability of SARS-CoV-2 infection is low. However, if symptoms are present, an infection cannot be excluded. Please contact a doctor.

          Do the tests work even if I am not symptomatic?

          The determining factor is the virus concentration. If you are symptomatic, this will be high. However, it is possible to detect traces of viral proteins early in the infection, even if you are asymptomatic.

          What is a unit test?

          Unit tests are RDTs and RDTs that can be done with a small drop of blood taken from the fingertip and analyzed in a few minutes. This type of test must always be completed by a virological test such as RT-PCR if it is positive.

          How to perform the Covid test?

          PCR and rapid PCR tests

Most PCR tests have a 24-hour turnaround time, and have an estimated reliability rate of approximately 92% for virological testing. For large-scale screening in EHPADs or health care facilities, PCR tests are often preferred.

          The rapid PCR test is performed in the same way as standard PCR tests. Its advantage: it combines all the steps of a PCR test in a single cartridge. It also requires a nasopharyngeal swab. A fluorescent color indicates whether it is a Covid-19 infection. The result is available in only about 1 hour.

          Rapid self-tests

          The tests approved for private use allow non-individuals to obtain a reliable result in a few minutes without any medical knowledge. They can be used flexibly, whether at home, at work, before entering institutions or before events with large numbers of participants. Like PCR tests, the self-test aims to collect material with a swab. This material will be dipped into a liquid that reacts when antigens are present. Antigens are molecules released by the virus that your body will fight against in case of contamination by the virus. This is an in vitro diagnostic test.
