Popular during the pandemic, COVID-19 tests are used to detect SARS-CoV-2 infection. Want to know everything about the different categories of tests so you know which type of test to choose? Here is our guide.
There are many ways to detect SARS-CoV-2 infection, from RT-PCR tests to rapid antigen tests: Rapid antigenic tests are convenient because they can be used at any location and without sending the sample to a laboratory. In addition, they provide a reliable result in as little as 10 to 15 minutes. This type of rapid test is usually performed in doctors' offices, hospitals or emergency rooms. Testing is recommended for a variety of conditions:
When in doubt, don't wait to act and get tested. Remember, a Covid test only tells you if you are a carrier of the virus at the time of testing. There is medical coverage for the different Covid tests according to certain criteria. If you have a medical prescription, if you have a complete vaccination schedule, if you are a minor or if you have been identified as a contact case, your test is systematically covered by the Health Insurance.
The Covid-19 rapid tests allow the detection of the virus either through the detection ofantigens (viral proteins) or through the detection ofantibodies. In both cases, it is an antigen-antibody reaction, which is made visible by immunochromatography. DocCheck offers a wide range of rapid antigen tests from leading brands such as Siemens, Abbott and MEDsan to detect Covid-19 infection directly or indirectly.
Remember, even if your Covid test is negative, it does not exempt you from barrier procedures. Proper hand washing and limiting physical contact are essential to protect those most vulnerable. Social distancing should be observed in public places or at various gatherings.
The Covid-19 virus has been shown to colonize the respiratory tract, particularly the upper tract. In order to detect it, the objective of a swab test is to bring back, by swabbing, cells that may contain the virus. There are different types of swabs, not to be confused with the testing methods detailed below.
Nasopharyngeal swabbing is the most common, and consists of introducing a swab into the nostril in order to collect cells by rotating the swab. Oropharyngeal sw abbing consists of introducing the swab into the oropharynx, i.e. the back of the throat. This sampling method replaces nasopharyngeal sampling in certain contraindications, but it is often less qualitative. Saliva sampling is the least accurate of all, because the quantities of virus are lower, it is only suitable for the PCR technique and is reserved for a targeted category of people.
Studies have shown that rapid antigen tests performed with a nasal swab are as effective as those performed with a nasopharyngeal swab. Therefore, their specificity and sensitivity are equal. You can find specific information on each manufacturer's page.
Positive result: The probability of SARS-CoV-2 infection is high. Please contact a physician and the health professionals of the competent authorities immediately. However, this is not mandatory.
Negative result: The probability of SARS-CoV-2 infection is low. However, if symptoms are present, an infection cannot be excluded. Please contact a doctor.
The determining factor is the virus concentration. If you are symptomatic, this will be high. However, it is possible to detect traces of viral proteins early in the infection, even if you are asymptomatic.
Unit tests are RDTs and RDTs that can be done with a small drop of blood taken from the fingertip and analyzed in a few minutes. This type of test must always be completed by a virological test such as RT-PCR if it is positive.
How to perform the Covid test?
In general, the instructions for use of the Covid self-tests detail the methodology to follow in order to perform an effective test. We sell reliable self-tests with a very good quality/price ratio on our site. Indeed, the products we offer are all top-of-the-line products. It is often the same procedure to follow. To do this you must :
There are different methods for detecting coronavirus, which differ in their use, the way they detect the virus and the way they display the result. Here is an overview of the different types of tests.
Rapid antigen tests are used for the detection of acute Covid-19 infection. They have become the most widely used tests because they are easily accessible and can be performed at home. This detection of Covid-19 is done by detecting viral proteins in the patient's secretion. First, a nasopharyngeal, pharyngeal or nasal swab is taken. The swab is then prepared according to the instructions and evaluated with the test kit. Overall, an antigenic self-test can identify early forms of the virus in the acute phase.
The rt-PCR tests, also known as PCR tests, are used to detect acute infection with Covid-19, allowing detection of the virus independently of the patient's stage of infection. Unlike antigenic rapid tests, PCR tests detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 genetic material. This requires a nasopharyngeal swab and evaluation of the sample in a laboratory. The result is available at the earliest 24 hours after the swab. PCR tests are the most reliable method of detection due to their higher sensitivity and specificity than other types of tests. Most PCR tests have a 24-hour turnaround time, and have an estimated reliability rate of approximately 92% for virological testing. For large-scale screening in EHPADs or health care facilities, PCR tests are often preferred.
The rapid PCR test is performed in the same way as standard PCR tests. Its advantage: it combines all the steps of a PCR test in a single cartridge. It also requires a nasopharyngeal swab. A fluorescent color indicates whether it is a Covid-19 infection. The result is available in only about 1 hour.
The tests approved for private use allow non-individuals to obtain a reliable result in a few minutes without any medical knowledge. They can be used flexibly, whether at home, at work, before entering institutions or before events with large numbers of participants. Like PCR tests, the self-test aims to collect material with a swab. This material will be dipped into a liquid that reacts when antigens are present. Antigens are molecules released by the virus that your body will fight against in case of contamination by the virus. This is an in vitro diagnostic test.
We recommend that you make sure that the test you buy is certified. For this reason, we only offer you Covid-19 self-tests with a CE mark. Please note: A positive self-test should always be followed by a PCR test.
Like many tests, Covid self-tests require a nasal swab. The depth of this nasal sw ab is often less than with a PCR test, for example. Its role is more preventative than anything else, as it does not trigger a recovery certificate or contact tracing device. It allows you to assess yourself independently. That's why it's really important to do a PCR test in case of a positive self-test, to make sure of the result, but also to allow a better follow-up of the disease.
These tests are not useful in detecting the virus, but they allow to know if the tested patient has developed an immune reaction to the virus. This test is performed via a blood test and allows the detection of the possible presence of antibodies in the patient.
